TeaTalk: We’re all twisted

We’re TeaTalkin’ again! I just started getting to work on Read the Room season 2, so I’m psyched to bring it to life and share it with you all. Speaking of funny things, Zavior Phillips drops by to share his thoughts on all things comedy in this week's Creator Takeover.

  1. 🏀 Las Vegas is about to get an NBA team in the league’s first expansion since 2004, and it’s set to be potentially the biggest sports deal in history. LeBron, Shaq, and Red Bull are some of the first names to put their hat in the ring for an ownership bid.

  2. 🌪️ Twisters is all the rage in Hollywood, debuting with a sky-high $81 million at the domestic box office. No surprise: there were sold-out screenings all throughout Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas. Big surprise: a lot of people went to go see the movie in 4DX to really feel the weather.

  3. 📺 The Emmys aren’t until September, but Hulu and FX are already the big winners. Shogun scored a record 25 nominations, while The Bear picked up 23 — the most ever for a comedy.

  4. 🎤 Eminem finally unseated Taylor Swift at the top of the Billboard 200 for the first time in April with his new album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce). You know I have this on repeat.

  5. 🤖 Elon Musk says Tesla will start using humanoid robots internally next year before selling them to other companies starting in 2026. Do you think they’ll get a lunch break?

GENRE: COMEDY / SKETCH COMEDY / STAND UP COMEDY

My biggest piece of advice for aspiring comedians is to really create your voice and presence online.

Content creation has absolutely impacted my success. Back in the day, if you were trying to get started, you'd have to go to open mics and find venues to get audience feedback on what was working and what wasn't. Nowadays, you can just turn on your phone and film something in your bedroom and get immediate feedback, good or bad, to see what really works and resonates with your audience.

Comedy is inherently relatable. The things that work are things that the audience finds a piece of themselves in. That's why a lot of comedy is based on things you see in the world around you or your own identities and experiences.

I love comedy because it makes people happy. Everyone should laugh more.

As always, reply to my email to ask me anything. If you know me, you know I will reply and who knows, you may get a feature if you share something. 🔥
